Allegiance provides licensed Speech and Language Pathologists also known as Speech Therapists that are well versed in treating the symptoms common with Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.  Many people don’t realize speech therapy not only includes communication skills but also swallowing.

Swallowing can become a dangerous task for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s or another disease due to decreased motor control of the swallowing muscles.   The muscles that control swallowing are responsible for liquids and chewed food to reach your esophagus and ultimately your stomach for digestion.  When you or your loved one has difficulty swallowing, the liquid or chewed food may enter your airway ultimately reaching your lungs.  This is called aspiration and is very dangerous.  As these liquids and chewed food sit in your lungs they grow bacteria and cause pneumonia which can be life threatening.  Coughing while eating or drinking is one of the most common signs of aspiration. Coughing is your body’s natural way of expelling aspirated particles, but with many diseases coughing isn’t enough. Prevention has also important.

Our expert Speech Therapists prescribe an exercise program that strengthens and facilitates normal movements of the swallowing muscles.  We can teach compensatory strategies in swallowing including motor planning activities to relearn swallowing and the use of liquid thickeners to prevent aspiration.  Our Speech Therapists have a proven track record improving swallowing with people with Parkinson’s, MS and other ailments.  Call us today for a complimentary in-home speech and swallowing assessment.
